merde

After a long, long day at work I was pleasantly surprised that my order for more memory and a disk for frost had arrived, so in the evening I rushed upstairs to install them. When I turned the machine on I noticed a strange smell, but it went away rather fast and nothing seemed to be burning. The machine did not boot however, it stopped at POST code C1, which means "bad memory" according to the manual, so I removed the new stick. Result: C1. I reseated the old and the new memory several times, started removing pieces of gear to reduce the problem. Nothing.
So I google and what do I find: causes for a C1: bad memory or a ruptured condensator. Symptoms of a ruptured condensator: strange smell (check), condensators not straight anymore (check), can happen to old systems at random or when they get disturbed (check). So I have a dead motherboard :-(.

it is a story that I already heard some year ago:

let's upgrade mamory > install memory > oops we need a new motherboard!!
