The weekend before last we went (sans child) to London.

The trip there was rather eventful as the Eurostar was delayed for 20' due to 'technical problems'. [livejournal.com profile] zoutke commented "If it is a technical problem, why are there so many policemen arriving?".

A bit later we saw a Sikh (to the best of my knowledge) person being 'escorted' out by a bunch of policemen... through the main lobby (!).

In fact 45' later we were able to board with the message that there was a technical problem, but also an non-authorized person on the replacement train necessitating a full security sweep...

The Eurostar is nice you read a bit, listen a bit to a Radio 4 podcast and ... Lille (Rijsel) is here. You read a little more then suddenly it is dark and you're going under the Channel. A little more and you've arrived at St Pancreas.

Our hotel (Premier Inn Kings Cross) was close to the station, not too expensive with a nice, clean big room. The best hotel we've stayed in London so far. Ah and the breakfast kept us full until 17:00 ;-).

The first evening we went walking round a bit and found a not too good restaurant to eat. On the train we bought Oyster cards, which are easy to use and not that expensive, so it was quick to take the tube.

Of course it might be that our POV changed from poor students to working people ;-).

On the second day we went for a walk, discovered the Regents Canal and followed that to Camden Market. The canal was a very pleasant discovery and we could also see the market rather early so it was quite empty. After that we took the tube (after going down 96 steps, escalator maintenance) to Oxford street and then went shopping. In the evening we went to see a theatre version of The 39 steps. This was quite funny and of course now we want to see the movie again.

The final day was mostly searching for a supermarket to bring some milk-egg-free products back to Belgium and going for a walk in Hyde park. The park was quite busy. After that we went and did some more shopping. Then we had diner in the "Fine Burger Company" beneath St Pancreas, followed by a short trip home.

All in all nice. However if the whole idea was to go without $CHILD, why did we miss him constantly?
