[backdated] 24/25 post-debconf-trip
May. 25th, 2006 07:31 amThese days we went for 2 day-trips. The 24th we went to the fantastic Monte Albán, which is very impressive and beautiful. We met maxx and ganneff there. Afterwards we went over a dirt-path and a dry riverbed to Arrazola where we visited a wood-carving shop. The carving is nicely done but it is a little strange that the normal way to handle the wood it to carve it when wet and then let it dry (and crack). After it is dry they will fix any problems that arose. In Belgium it is traditional to first let the wood dry, then carve.
After that we went for diner at some all-you-can-eat buffet place. Not too bad and I was happy to have a plat full of vegetables. Then off to the pre-columbian pottery of San Bartolo Coyotepec. Having played a lot with clay as a child I was very impressed by the ability and talent of the people there. We saw how they make the famous black shiny pottery. To finish the long day we went to the Cuilapán monastery. For a ruin it is pretty impressive. Then off to Oaxaca for cocktails and beer.
The day after we went for a shorter trip, followed by rest for the most of us. First we were off to see the 2000 year old tree at Santa María El Tule, afterwards we went to Mitla. Mitla itself feels a lot like greek ruins with all the decorations. After that we went to Teotitlán del Valle where we could see how traditional rugs where made. A pity we're a family of allergic people :-(. We finished the trip to and tasting at a Mescal factory.
We finished the day and the visit to Oaxaca at a local salsa club, which was pretty nice and makes me want to take up dancing again...
