Yesterday while we were eating we heard the tune of the TV news on the TV in the other room. Our 5 year old immediately proclaimed: "Dat zie ik niet graag, met die ongelukken, pikkedieven en doden" (I don't like to watch that with the accidents, thieves-that-steal and dead people), "Eugh... Het nieuws?" (Hmm. Do you mean the news?) "ja, dat is niet voor kindjes!" (Yes, it is not for kids!).
We then tried to explain that although the news is almost always bad it still is interesting to know what happens in the world, especially as I have to go and vote in a few months. (the socialist already lost my vote by proposing free childcare for 2 years for single parents without work. Not that they don't need it but it already is very cheap for them and expensive for us: you pay depending on your income and low income people pay on the order of 2 €/day while normal people pay round 18 €/day or more) And that they only show bad, dangerous or strange things because people are not that interested in 'normal happiness' stories.
Still he has a point.
