The Power of Nightmares, part II
Oct. 28th, 2004 07:45 amAs summarized by iconoplex the second part was about the 90's and how the fall of the USSR made both groups think that they "had won". The newcons in the USA then tried to topple Clinton by inventing stories about his bad character. They had the editor of a conservative newspaper admitting that they knew the stories were made up! The Islamic group was split in moderate "reform through political means" and "kill all non-muslims". The moderates got almost to power in Algeria and Egypt, in both cases the government outlawed the movements and this shifted power to the extremists that just started killing people. This turned into a dirty, very dirty in Algeria, war that in the end caused the extremists to conclude that they were the only 100% true muslim and that everybody else had to die, including rival extremists. Add to this a militaristic regime that in Algeria tried to make the extremists more extreme so that the population would in fear accept the regime as their saviour and you have a nice bloodbath.
All in all scary stuff.
