the holiday was great, the return wasn't
Sep. 14th, 2006 08:57 amThe weather in calabria was good, unlike the rest of europe and we had a lot of fun. I'm trying to get the pictures organized for upload :-S.
The return to work was a bitch, as expected. By Friday last week I thought I had the situation under control as I walked into work, turned on my R40 and heard 'click, click, click'. A quick check on VT 12 shows kernel error messages like 'dma timeout' 'read error' flash past. I power off the machine, power it on again and '200 Fixed disk error'.
I restored the machine from a 2 year old partimage copy of the linux part, a 4 months old windows partimage copy and the nightly rsync copies to frost. The hardest problem was that I had to install ubuntu to use that to restore the partimage linux partition, upgrade that through the X transition (again) and then convincing windows that yes, it should boot (in vmware). The last part took 2 days (!) so now I'm not using a 'true' windows partition anymore but a normal vmware virtual disk.
I should do a partimage copy of the machine of
zoutke again and revamp the nightly backup to also include the list of installed packages and the debconf db.
So now I'm nearly a week later and again way behind on everything! :-(
In the mits of this I see the new iMac's. 24 inch... drool. I've already decided on the name: after sharrow (the laptop) we'll have Adele (Mundy of Chatsworth). The servers on the other hand are called frost, Daziel and of course Pascoe.
